Maria Vu chosen as CFISD Student of the Week

Maria Vu
Cypress Creek High School senior Marie Vu plans to one day practice anesthesiology, and is well on her way to accomplishing her goal. She ranks in the top 1 percent of her class and was a nominee for the National Youth Leadership Forum Medicine and National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists Award of Excellence. A four-year veteran on the Cougars’ tennis team and an avid fan of music, Vu draws inspiration from the hard work of her mother.
School: Cypress Creek High School
Age: 17
Grade: 12

Accomplishments: National Youth Leadership Forum: Medicine and National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists Award of Excellence nominee; earned AP Scholar with Honor Award; Presidential Citation Award through Interact Club; co-founded Abraham Alliance Club to promote peace between conflicting religions; ranked in top 1 percent of senior class.

Favorite class: Anatomy and Physiology. “I find learning new things about the human body interesting. Also, one of my favorite teachers happens to teach that class!”

Favorite things to do after class: Playing tennis and hanging out with my friends.

Favorite song: Blank Space by Taylor Swift

Favorite website: Etsy. “It allows me to browse and buy items that are handcrafted by individual shops.”

Favorite TV show: The Walking Dead. “It has a very captivating storyline that is atypical to any other TV show.”

Favorite movie: White Chicks. “I find that movie hilarious and entertaining. It can cheer me up when I'm feeling down.”

Ambition: “I aspire to become a doctor, particularly an anesthesiologist. Liver disease has been prominent in my family history, so I wish to study medicine or anything related to it in order to deepen my knowledge about these certain diseases.”

What topics/things are you passionate about? Medicine and diseases. “There are a vast amount of diseases prevalent around the world which cripple the lives of many hard-working people. I think it’s important that we continue studying and finding out more about these health issues, so one day, we may be able to lessen the damage inflicted by these diseases or even totally eradicate it.”

What inspires you? My mother. “Despite having to wake up at 5 a.m. for her job while raising four children who are either in college or almost in college, my mother still embodies a spirited individual. She consistently does work in and out of the house without a single complaint and encourages me every single day. I aspire to have the same determinism as my mother one day.”

What three things can’t you live without? Friends and family, music and my phone. “As cliché as it sounds, [friends and family] are always there to support me during the most stressful times of my life. Whenever I'm having a bad day, music is my ultimate source of comfort.”

Cy Creek wins GEM grant for digital credit recovery program

Cy Creek HS teacher Wendy Bruner assists two students during a special credit-recovery class funded in part by a GEM grant.

Cy Creek HS is home to one of five winning teams of the 2014 GEM grants. The school's application sought to take advantage of existing district technology and provide students from grades 10-11 with a way to retake classes after school and on weekends instead of during summer school. Using campus computers and a CFISD-licensed digital credit recovery program, grant money was used to cover off-contract pay for teachers to provide instruction.

“These classes are a great opportunity for students to recapture credits during non-traditional hours,” said Richard Alcorn, Cy Creek assistant principal.

Alcorn led the team responsible for submitting the grant application.

The classes will continue through the remainder of the 2014-2015 school year.
