Chase Smith, Caleb Moritz and Jacob Shafer each caught a calf at this year's Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Calf Scramble. At each Rodeo performance, 30 scramble participants
line up to compete and catch one of the 14
calves. Eligible scramblers come from counties
throughout Texas and must be active in their
local FFA chapter or 4-H club.
Youngsters scramble to catch a calf, halter it and
lead the calf back to the winner’s square. Recipients receive a $1,500 certificate to purchase
a breeding beef heifer or market steer they will
raise and return to exhibit at the following year’s
Show. Upon returning, if the exhibitor completes
the requirements of the program, they receive the
remaining $250. Scramblers are expected to maintain
accounting records, submit monthly progress reports
to their donors and complete two essays throughout
the year. We are proud of our three Cy Creek winners!
